Building Software with AI: Our AI-Native Development Workflow
Building Software with AI: Our AI-Native Development Workflow
We build software differently than most teams. AI isn't just a tool we use occasionally — it's embedded in every step of our development process.
What AI-Native Development Means
Traditional development: Write code → Test → Debug → Repeat
AI-native development: Describe intent → AI generates code → Review → Refine → Ship
The difference isn't about replacing developers. It's about amplifying them. A developer with AI tools can move 3-5x faster while maintaining quality.
Our Primary Tool: Claude Code
Claude Code is our main development companion. Here's how we use it:
1. Architecture Discussions
Before writing code, we discuss architecture with Claude:
- "I need to build X. What are the tradeoffs between approach A and B?"
- "Here's my current structure. What would you change?"
- "What edge cases am I missing?"
The AI doesn't make decisions — it surfaces considerations we might miss.
2. Code Generation
For new features:
- Describe what we need in natural language
- Claude generates the initial implementation
- We review, refine, and iterate
For existing code:
- Point Claude at the relevant files
- Describe the change needed
- Claude understands context and generates appropriate code
3. Debugging
When something breaks:
- Share the error and relevant code
- Claude analyzes and suggests fixes
- Often spots issues we'd spend hours finding
4. Refactoring
For code improvements:
- "This function is getting complex. How would you simplify it?"
- "Apply this pattern across these files"
- "Make this code more maintainable"
The Workflow in Practice
Here's what a typical feature build looks like:
Hour 1: Planning- Discuss requirements with Claude
- Map out the approach
- Identify potential issues
- Claude generates core functionality
- We review and adjust
- Handle edge cases together
- Error handling
- Tests
- Documentation
What used to take a day now takes half a day. What used to take a week now takes 2-3 days.
What AI Can't Do (Yet)
We're realistic about limitations:
AI Struggles With:
- Deep domain knowledge — Understanding your specific business context
- Strategic decisions — Should we build this feature at all?
- User empathy — What do users actually need?
- Integration complexity — How all the pieces fit together
- Performance optimization — Often suggests correct but suboptimal code
Humans Still Essential For:
- Code review (AI makes mistakes)
- Architecture decisions
- User research and product direction
- Quality judgment
- Security audits
The 80/20 Rule
AI handles about 80% of the typing. Humans handle 100% of the thinking.
This isn't a contradiction. The value of development was never in typing speed — it's in making the right decisions. AI removes the friction between decision and implementation.
Tools We Use
Primary:- Claude Code — Main development AI
- Claude API — For AI features in products
- GitHub Copilot — Inline completions
- GPT-4 — Second opinion, different perspective
- Cursor — AI-native code editor (when we need it)
- v0 — Rapid UI prototyping
Productivity Gains
Real numbers from our recent projects:
| Metric | Before AI | With AI |
| Feature dev time | 1 week | 2-3 days |
| Bug fixing | Hours | Minutes |
| Boilerplate code | Manual | Generated |
| Documentation | Often skipped | Generated |
The Mindset Shift
Working with AI requires different thinking:
Old mindset: "How do I write this code?" New mindset: "How do I describe what I need?" Old mindset: "I need to know every syntax detail." New mindset: "I need to know what's possible and how to verify quality." Old mindset: "Writing code is the work." New mindset: "Making decisions is the work. Code is the output."Getting Started
If you want to adopt AI-native development:
1. Start with a real project — Learning in isolation doesn't stick
2. Use Claude Code — It's the best tool for software development
3. Begin with small tasks — Bug fixes, refactoring, tests
4. Trust but verify — AI makes mistakes. Review everything.
5. Build the habit — Ask AI first, then write yourself only when needed
The Future
AI-native development is still early. Tools are improving monthly. What works today will seem primitive in a year.
But the core principle will remain: AI amplifies human capability. The developers who learn to work with AI will build things that seem impossible today.
